Better
Laurie & Carol Hatchard - Garden Barn“Feedback from our customers has been really good - they really like the building - and we’re now even more competitive because we’ve got all weather protection and plenty of room to grow.”
The buildings sturdy construction provides both excellent security and a weatherproof environment for shoppers and plants alike.
Because connections are manufactured as part of the columns and rafter, members are simply bolted together with no need for external brackets.
The Barn Company system features embedded purlins and girts between the portal frames and seamless connections, to create clean, tidy structural lines that can be fitted with nearly any internal finishing.
When Laurie and Carol Hatchard set up their plant shop in Masterton 11 years ago, naming it High Street Plants, they had no idea that ten years later they’d outgrow their premises and be looking for a bigger space.
Laurie and Carol Hatchard shopped around, looking at numerous shed companies before deciding on The Barn Company.
As well as offering the right price, better quality and great design, the Hatchards were impressed with the bracketless portal system that meant no centre posts in the building, giving them more options when it came to fitting out their new shop. Also top of the priority list were security and something that offered good protection from the elements for their plants.
The Hatchards were delighted with the excellent personal service, with regular updates during the building process.
Customers have commented on the great look of the building, and the Hatchards are confident about the building’s integrity, following comments from the crane driver who said it was the first time he’d ever worked with steel frames that didn’t creak and groan as they were going up.
The new building has created better ambience, and given the company a competitive edge, offering all weather service to their customers.
The Hatchards are delighted with their new space, and are enjoying trading under their new name, The Garden Barn, and continuing to grow their plant business.
BETTER SYSTEMS
Simplicity
The construction of our portal frames uses no external brackets as the connections are manufactured as part of the column and rafter, with the members simply bolted together to form the portal frame.
The purlins, girts and windposts are connected using a total of six different brackets to form the entire building structure, with all connections standardised to limit tools changes and product requirements on site. This simplicity of design results in a number of benefits including better raw material utilisation, and improved manufacturing, transport and erection times.
Efficiency
When an order is placed with The Barn Company, the building structure is custom produced from the New Zealand manufacturers and this is combined with fasteners before being dispatched. This eliminates stock and material handling which again reduces costs and improves efficiencies for our customers.
Appeal
To achieve our objective of developing an aesthetically appealing structure, both inside and out. This feature is regularly commented on by customers, and is critical to the overall design finish, given the majority of our buildings remained unlined throughout their life.

BRACKETLESS PORTAL SYSTEM
This system is unique to The Barn Company, and is made up of unique components that support bigger spans, better technology and faster manufacturing.
